Sample Behavior Reduction questions

  1. Question 1 · Behavior Reduction

Whenever an RBT presents a matching task, a client drops to the floor, and the RBT pauses the task until he gets up. Dropping has increased across sessions. It does not occur when the RBT is busy with paperwork and not talking to him, as long as no task is presented. What function does this behavior most likely serve?

    1. A. Escape from demands
    2. B. Access to attention
    3. C. Access to a tangible item
    4. D. Automatic reinforcement
    Show the answer

    A. Escape from demands

Dropping happens when a task is presented and pauses that task, which fits escape. It does not happen when the RBT is busy and not attending to him, which is exactly when attention-maintained behavior would be most likely, so attention fits poorly.

  2. Question 2 · Behavior Reduction

An RBT is implementing a high-probability request sequence before asking a client to clean up. What should the RBT do right after the client completes each easy request in the sequence?

    1. A. Give the next request right away without any praise
    2. B. Deliver brief praise before giving the next request
    3. C. Wait several minutes before continuing the sequence
    4. D. Repeat the exact same easy request a second time
    Show the answer

    B. Deliver brief praise before giving the next request

Each easy request in the sequence is followed by quick praise or other reinforcement, which builds the momentum the sequence depends on. Skipping reinforcement weakens that momentum, and a long pause lets it fade before the harder request.

  3. Question 3 · Behavior Reduction

During a DRO procedure, a client engages in the target behavior 30 seconds into a 5 minute interval. According to how DRO works, what should happen to reinforcement for that interval?

    1. A. Reinforcement is still delivered at the end of the interval since some of it passed without the behavior
    2. B. Reinforcement is withheld for that interval because the target behavior occurred
    3. C. Reinforcement is delivered immediately despite the behavior occurring
    4. D. The interval length is permanently shortened for the rest of the session
    Show the answer

    B. Reinforcement is withheld for that interval because the target behavior occurred

In a DRO procedure, reinforcement depends on the target behavior not occurring at all during the interval, so one instance of the behavior means that interval does not earn reinforcement. Many DRO procedures also reset the interval clock when the behavior occurs.
